Creston teacher sues to block firing after Charlie Kirk comment

A Creston High school teacher is suing the school district for taking steps to fire her after a comment she posted on conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s death.

Melissa Crook claims in a federal lawsuit that the school district is violating her free speech rights. Crook posted a comment after Kirk’s assassination that said she doesn’t wish death on anyone, but called Kirk not being here “a blessing.” She posted an apology the next day.

The superintendent placed Crook on administrative leave and later recommended firing her. Crook is asking a judge to block the district from taking steps to fire her. She argues her comment was her own private opinion, and also says the superintendent and school board president have made posts in support of Kirk, President Donald Trump, and other GOP political figures.

A former Oskaloosa art teacher is suing that district after being fired for a social media post he made about Kirk’s assassination. Matthew Kargol also accuses the school district of violating his free speech rights.
