Emergency crews in Storm Lake responded Tuesday afternoon after a gas line was struck near the Buena Vista University (BVU) campus. According to the Storm Lake Police Department, officers are assisting the Storm Lake Fire Department and BVU Campus Security in managing the situation.
As a safety precaution, individuals on the north side of 4th Street — including those in Grand Hall, Constitution Hall, Brisco, Liberty Hall, Ballou, the new apartments, the Forum, and Dixon-Eilers — have been asked to evacuate immediately.
Authorities say nearby residential homes are not required to evacuate but are encouraged to shelter in place while crews work to contain the leak. Alliant Energy personnel are currently on scene assessing and repairing the damaged gas line.
Officials urge the public to avoid the area to ensure emergency responders can work safely. Updates will be shared as new information becomes available.
