Carrasco Named Firefighter of the Year by Manilla Fire and Rescue

MANILLA, Iowa — A dedicated member of Manilla Fire and Rescue is being recognized for his commitment, training, and service to both the department and the community.

Manuel Carrasco was recently honored as Manilla Fire and Rescue’s Firefighter of the Year, an award he says came as a complete surprise.

“Last night, I was honored to receive the Firefighter of the Year award from Manilla Fire and Rescue,” Carrasco shared. “I don’t do this for the recognition, but this award really means a lot to me. I’m very grateful to serve alongside such a dedicated group of men and women, and thankful for the support of my family and our community.”

Carrasco also joked that he “clearly didn’t dress for the occasion,” noting he had no idea he would be receiving the award.

According to Fire Chief Cory Gaskill, the honor reflects far more than just a single year of service. Gaskill highlighted Carrasco’s intense commitment to both professional development and his department. While working six days a week and growing his family to four, Carrasco completed a six-month EMT course, a 40-hour Haz-Mat Operations class compressed into two weekends, and retook Firefighter 1 certification — a course he had previously completed in high school.

“Not many would take on that kind of workload,” Gaskill said, noting the sacrifices made not only by Carrasco but also by his family. “It takes a lot for us, but even more for our families.”

Chief Gaskill added that he looks forward to many more years of working alongside Carrasco.

The Firefighter of the Year award recognizes dedication, continued training, and service beyond the call — qualities Carrasco has clearly demonstrated both on and off duty.
