Iowa Court of Appeals Overturns Machine Gun Conviction of Former Adair Police Chief Bradley Wendt

ADAIR, Iowa — KCCI-TV reports the Iowa Court of Appeals has overturned former Adair Police Chief Bradley Wendt’s conviction for unlawfully possessing a machine gun, citing that federal law regarding the possession of machine guns by police officers is too vague.

Wendt was convicted of nearly a dozen charges in 2024 after purchasing 90 machine guns and lying about it to federal authorities. Evidence at trial showed Wendt purchased the guns for the department but later sold them at a personal profit of nearly $80,000.

The rest of his charges still stand, so this decision does not impact his sentence. Wendt was sentenced to five years in federal custody.
