Dow City to Unveil New Memorial Wall Honoring Local Heroes
(DOW CITY, Iowa) Members of the Dow City American Legion Post #444 are set to mark the start of America 250 celebrations in Dow City this Memorial Day with the unveiling of a historic Memorial Wall at the Dow City Cemetery.
Ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. on May 25, and members of the public are welcome and invited to attend.
“As we reflect on our nation’s great history this semiquincentennial year, it is fitting and appropriate that we pause to show our gratitude and respect for the men and women who have served in uniform,” said Doyle Siglin, Commander of American Legion Post #444. “Our veterans are an important part of the American story. With this Memorial Wall, we seek to honor their service and forever remember their contributions to the cause of freedom.”
The new Memorial Wall, located at the Dow City Cemetery, measures approximately 11 feet tall by 8 feet wide and is crafted of concrete with custom stainless-steel railings that will hold the plaques. It features 330 individual commemorative plates, each bearing the name and branch of service for every military veteran — from the Civil War to present day — who is buried in the Dow City Cemetery.
The cemetery serves as the final resting place of the second-highest number of veterans in Crawford County.
In addition to the unveiling, the morning’s ceremonies will include patriotic music, speeches, prayers, a gun salute and “Taps.”
