44th Annual Carstens Farm Days Showcases Iowa’s Agricultural Heritage

SHELBY, Iowa – The 44th Annual Carstens Farm Days will take place September 12 and 13 at Carstens Farm, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience Iowa’s rich farm history. This year’s event will feature Massey Harris and Massey Ferguson tractors and equipment, alongside a wide array of historic farm operations, demonstrations, and family-friendly activities.
A Celebration of Farming Traditions
Carstens Farm Days has long been a highlight for the region, drawing crowds to see over 200 restored antique tractors, steam engines powering threshing machines, and a parade of vintage machinery each afternoon at 2 p.m. The original Carstens farm buildings will be open for tours, with live demonstrations that bring history to life for all ages.
Food, Crafts, and Community
Visitors can enjoy fresh hamburgers, homemade ice cream, and specialty dinners, including a ham ball supper on Friday from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. On Saturday, Sept. 12 Staley’s Chicken dinner will be served at 5:30 pm. Proceeds from food sales support ongoing maintenance at the historic Carstens 1880 Farmstead. Over fifty crafters and vendors will offer crafts, plants, antiques, coffee and local treats, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Special Features
- Quilt Show: A colorful display of quilts and wearable art will be featured, with a handmade quilt raffle on Sunday evening. Quilters are invited to participate by displaying their work.
- Miniature Barn Auction: Four unique handmade miniature barns will be auctioned on Saturday at 3 p.m., with proceeds supporting farm operations.
- Sunday Worship: A non-denominational worship service will be held Sunday at 9:00 a.m. on the lawn, led by Trinity Lutheran Church of Avoca.
Admission and Details
Admission is $10 per day for everyone nine years and older, with cashless payment available at the gate. Carstens 1880 Farmstead is a non-profit, volunteer-run 75-acre working farm museum located at 32409, 380th St, Shelby, IA 51570. The farmstead is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
