New Memorial Wall in Dow City Preserves the Names and Service of Local Veterans

DOW CITY, Iowa (May 25, 2026) — Members of the Dow City American Legion, Post #444, marked the start of America 250 celebrations in Dow City this Memorial Day with the dedication of an historic Memorial Wall at the Dow City Cemetery. Ceremonies began at 10:00 a.m. on May 25, with a large, proud, and patriotic crowd in attendance.

"As we reflect on our nation's great history, this semi quincentennial year, it is fitting and appropriate that we pause to show our gratitude and respect for the men and women who have served in uniform," said Doyle Siglin, Commander of American Legion Post # 444. "Our veterans are an important part of the American story. With this Memorial Wall, we seek to honor their service and to forever remember their contributions to the cause of freedom."

The new Memorial Wall features hundreds of individual commemorative plaques, each bearing the name and branch of service and if pertinent the theatre of war for every military veteran from the Civil War to today. The Memorial Wall prominently reads “Veterans who call this cemetery their final resting place” has the second highest number of veterans in Crawford County.

In addition to the dedication, the morning ceremonies led by Doyle Siglin included the presentation of patriotic songs by Addie Wood and Madilyn Nelson, recorded music by Trace Adkins and Toby Keith, emotional readings by Dane Mueller, and Daxton Sharp, a powerful and inspiring speech by Carolyn Starkweather, opening and closing prayers by Rollie Roberts, the 21-gun salute and Taps. “All gave some-some gave all.”
