Hazmat Semi Fire Shuts Down I-29 Near Missouri Valley, Prompts Massive Multi-Agency Response

A semi-trailer fire involving hazardous and flammable materials shut down northbound Interstate 29 near Missouri Valley for several hours Saturday.
According to Harrison County Emergency Management, the Harrison County Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 1:35 p.m. on July 11 reporting a semi fire near mile marker 75, just south of the Missouri Valley interchange.
When firefighters arrived, the rear of the semi-trailer was heavily involved in flames. The trailer was displaying placards indicating it was carrying hazardous and flammable materials.
Fire crews began suppression efforts while additional departments were requested through mutual aid. After the flames were extinguished, operations shifted toward containing and mitigating the hazardous materials.
The Tri-County Special Operations Team was activated to assist. The team includes firefighters from Crawford, Harrison and Shelby counties who are trained to the hazardous materials technician level.
Additional personnel were also requested because of the hot weather conditions, allowing firefighters working at the scene to rotate out for breaks.
Arrow Towing and Environmental Solutions Inc. later arrived and removed the remaining hazardous materials. The trailer was hauled away, and crews completed cleanup work along the interstate.
The northbound lanes of I-29 remained closed during most of the response and reopened at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Agencies assisting at the scene included Missouri Valley, Logan, Modale, Woodbine, Mondamin, Dunlap, Crescent and Council Bluffs fire departments, along with Blair, Nebraska, Fire and Rescue. The Iowa State Patrol, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Transportation, Arrow Towing, Environmental Solutions Inc. and Harrison County Emergency Management also assisted.
