74th Schleswig Calf Show Days Celebration starts Friday

Schleswig’s Calf Show Days Celebration is back for the 74th time this year.

Ryan Ernst says he attended this event many times growing up and now he enjoys helping make it happen.

“The great small town feel of an event like this, to keep it so affordable is great for everyone in the community and just seeing the smiling faces of the kids faces and families coming back spending time together and making memories is what it’s all about,” said Ryan Ernst.

Ryan says all proceeds from the basket raffle and carnival ticket sales go right back to the Schleswig Community Club. Laura Ernst says they hope to have all of their basket raffle entries turned in at Bank Iowa in Schleswig by 10 a.m. Friday morning.

“All you have to do is put a basket together. It doesn’t actually have to be in a basket. It can be anything. We have baskets that range from $50 to the biggest item we have I think is the smoker,” said Laura Ernst.

She says the carnival opens at 3:30 p.m. on Friday and they are encouraging people to buy their tickets in advance.

“Saturday morning after the parade we see a huge rush of kids and parents run to the ticket booth. We are trying to alleviate that by having four people working around the ticket booth so that people aren’t waiting in line too long but if you buy presale then you won’t have to worry about that,” said Laura Ernst.

She says 10 tickets cost $6 at the event instead of $5 for a presale package. The lineup for Saturday’s parade begins at 9:30 a.m. with the kiddie parade lines up at 6th and Cedar, the main parade at the Schleswig School parking lot, and the antique tractors in the southeast corner of that lot.

“There is a softball tournament going on at the same time as the parade and so it gets really congested at the school. We do ask if you are participating in the softball tournament that you try not to come or go during the parade lineup just so you don’t get stuck in a line of traffic,” said Laura Ernst.

Laura says they have people who come to Schleswig every year just for Calf Show Days. You can find out even more about the 74th celebration including the vendors, beer garden, and live music by “Next of Kin” on the event’s Facebook page.
