HGM Associates gives bilingual presentation about Wellness Center
The Crawford County Wellness Center committee and HGM Associates hosted a town hall meeting at the Denison High School Fine Arts Center on Wednesday night.
HGM presented early designs for the proposed wellness center and took questions about the project. Some answers will come as the project moves forward. Current plans call for building the center on North 16th Street next to the Denison Aquatic Center across the street from the high school. The presented plans for the facility include indoor fields, multiple hard-surface courts, and an elevated walking track. They also featured several workout and meeting rooms along with a child care area and concession stand. HGM says part of the goal with this center is to host large regional athletic tournaments. They say one proposed area would be designed to replace the existing Senior Center in Denison. Their current drawings will not affect the pool or mini golf course but do involve moving the sand volleyball courts. There is currently no concrete timeline for construction to begin. The wellness center committee will be hosting another town hall meeting in November with updates on the facility.
Juan Campos of Denison served as a volunteer interpreter during Wednesday’s town hall meeting. He delivered some closing remarks in Spanish before giving a similar message in English. Campos says finding something to do in the winter especially has been a struggle since his own family moved here in 1999.
“I was young back then. I’m not young anymore. Up until now we still struggle with that. I think the youth needs a place like this to keep busy during the winter time and keep out of trouble,” said Juan Campos.
Campos highlighted the Denison United Football Club in the town hall meeting audience as just one example of how local youth could benefit from a brand new facility.
“Based on the tournaments that we’ve been to there’s a lot of buildings in a lot of different cities that are just beautiful and I think Denison deserves something like that. My kid now is 15. Maybe he’s going to be able to see this or maybe not. I’m still up for it because the whole city of Denison is going to be affected by it and going to see the benefit of it,” said Juan Campos.
