Squirrel reportedly causes widespread power outages in Dunlap

KDSN has verified reports of the City of Dunlap losing power Friday afternoon.
Phillip Davis Harrison County Emergency Management Coordinator says a fire at a transmitter is part of what caused the problem.
"We just received a report that there was a possible fire and/or an explosion near the substation just north of Dunlap," Davis said.
Davis also said this was due to an unlikely critter -- a squirrel. Davis says the tiny woodland creature allegedly happened to have had his paws where they shouldn't have been...
A squirrel got into the transformer, " Davis said. "It's not uncommon for squirrels to get into that area. They try to keep their equipment protected but sometimes their protective measures just don't handle all the situations that they need."
Davis says Mid-American Energy, who handles the electrical power for the city of Dunlap, expects power to return mid to late afternoon Friday.
