Iowa State Patrol Encouraging Safe Thanksgiving Travel

Iowa State Patrol Encouraging Safe Thanksgiving Travel

The Iowa State Patrol is encouraging everyone to make safe driving one of their Thanksgiving traditions. Trooper Shelby McCreedy of District 4 in Denison says they want people to wear their seatbelts and avoid driving impaired, distracted, or too fast.

“Nobody wants to lose a family member any time of the year but especially during the holidays,” said McCreedy. “Although enjoying the time off is great, don’t get behind the wheel of a car. We always say if you feel different you drive different. Even the slightest amount of impairment can be catastrophic on the roadways.”

She says the five-year average of fatal crashes over this holiday is about four per weekend and the ideal number is zero.

“I think it’s supposed to be nice around here but a lot of people do travel distances so know the forecast for where you are traveling and ensure you are up-to-date on any winter weather that might be impacting that area because road conditions change very quickly,” said McCreedy.

McCreedy says it’s even more important to pay close attention while driving with the increased traffic on the road during a holiday weekend.
