Tuesday Storm Could Cause Icy Roads in Northwest Iowa
Forecasters say wintery weather will return to northwest Iowa on Tuesday with Crawford, Carroll, and Sac counties among those under a Winter Weather Advisory. Meteorologist Alexis Jimenez at the National Weather Service in Des Moines says we could see some snow along with a light glazing of ice.
“Impacts from that will mostly be on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses,” said Jimenez. “As far as snow amounts right now for your area we’re seeing maybe up to an inch for West Central Iowa. Northwest Iowa may see higher amounts up to even close to five inches near the Minnesota border.”
The pre-winter storm could have a significant impact on certain parts of the road if you happen to be traveling.
“The biggest impact will be the ice glazing and accumulation of freezing rain and maybe some extra slick spots in that snow,” said Jimenez. “Just be careful traveling out there especially as things start cooling off in the afternoon.”
The snow that does fall will likely be sticking around for a while with the bitter cold coming in behind the storm front.
“We’re going to have some wind chills in the morning tomorrow reaching nearly zero degrees and up the northwest even subzero wind chills are expected,” said Jimenez. “It’s not going to get very warm tomorrow. We’re only going to see highs in that region in the mid to upper-20s but returning to average by the end of the week.”
