City of Denison Officially Agrees to Buy Burgess Land

City of Denison Officially Agrees to Buy Burgess Land

The City of Denison officially agreed to buy around 25 acres of land south of town this week.

The city council approved the purchase of $308,880 from The Estate of Scott Burgess at their regular meeting. Mayor Pam Soseman says there is a critical need for new construction dating back several years.

“I think there was a housing survey done five years ago where 250 new units were needed. We’ve really dropped the ball on this one and not done a good job of bringing in housing. The council felt that this was a good purchase to be able to expand housing in Denison,” Soseman says.

She says no decisions have been made yet on what a potential development might look like.

“People say we need a $200,000 build and then other people say we need a $300,000 build so people can upgrade but yet we’re still missing some things with those LMI people. We will look closely at making sure what we bring in kind of fits the neighborhood,” Soseman says.

She says the city may establish a bond to help pay for the purchase.
