Denison City Council Holding 2023-24 Budget Workshops

The city council will have a larger role in determining Denison’s budgets for the upcoming fiscal year.

City Clerk Jodie Flaherty says they will host a pair of special meetings over the next two weeks where departments present their budgets directly to the council without any cuts.

“One of the council members actually said can we go back to the way that it was years ago? Where departments actually present to us and tell us what they all need. No one really stated why they wanted to get more involved. I think it's a blessing that they do want to see the entire budget process and just go through it,” said Flaherty.

She says city administration brought the budgets to the council in years past. Flaherty says there are many things to consider including capital improvement projects, the 2023 bond, and statewide changes to property tax revenue.

“One of the biggest changes this year is the multi-residential property class. It was eliminated and it’s now going to match the residential. That’s on the first $150,000 of the taxable valuation. So essentially cities are receiving fewer taxes than they have in years past,” said Flaherty.

The first budget workshop happened Monday night with no formal action taken. A second special meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18. The next regular city council meeting is Tuesday, January 17.
