Crawford County Advances Pair of Bridge Replacements

Crawford County took steps toward replacing two different bridges this week.
The board of supervisors approved a bid of just under $1.2 million from Graves Construction in Spencer for a County Road L51 bridge project over the Soldier River north of Charter Oak. Chairman Ty Rosburg says that cost came in lower than the engineer's estimate.
"Someday we want to do a little bit more to that road and having that bridge already rebuilt and widened is really going to be an asset," said Rosburg. "The folks that live up there in Ricketts, other than to use gravel, the pavement only goes north or south. They're only connected by our county pavement there on L51 so we just have to make sure it's a good, easy way to get home for them."
Rosburg says he signed a letter of support for a RAISE grant application relating to the Donna Reed Road bridge.
"That bridge is within the city limits but it's something that actually benefits us both," said Rosburg. "That's obviously one of our county farm-to-market roads and it's a well-used road for not only the citizens of Denison but the farmers who live to the south."
He says they also amended their County Five-Year Program filed with the Iowa DOT by adding that bridge over the Union Pacific railroad to their plans. They also held two public hearings. One is about reclassifying a section of 300th Street just south of Highway 141 from a Level B to Level A service road. The other is about vacating part of the right-of-way near P Avenue and Kenwood Road. Rosburg says they heard no objections and plan to vote on each item next week.
