The Denison Middle School Jazz Band and Denison High School’s Jazz 1 and 2 bands will be performing together on Friday, March 10th at 7 pm. The concert will be at the Denison High School Fine Arts Center. High school band director Ruben Newell says this is one of his favorite concerts.
“It’s always a fun concert. Because it’s more casual, it’s less formal than a concert band concert. You get to hear the kids' solos and the solos are improvised. They’re getting up and really putting themselves out there and making it up as they go along. It’s just a fun concert.”
Newell says there will be a variety of jazz styles and pieces, including a few different versions of swing, blues, funk rock, and a Latin mambo. He says that despite the assortment of pieces, the jazz concert has low attendance.
“I think some people think jazz is, I don’t know what they think jazz is like it’s some hoity-toity upper-class thing… but it’s just a fun concert for anybody. Even if you don’t have kids in the program, it’s a good concert for the community to come and see what the jazz band is about.”
