Senator Grassley Visits Denison High School
Chuck Grassley, United States Senator for Iowa, visited Denison High School for a Q&A with several Denison students this past Monday. After the Senator was done taking questions from students, Grassley said it’s important to him to participate in events such as this one. “It’s important for me to go to high schools because I never get people under 18 years of age to come to my town meetings. The other thing is just that in the spirit of representative government, you gotta know what's on people's minds. I get more of that from an open town meeting so I go to a lot of places where people can't come to me.” Grassley said it’s particularly important to reach out to high school youth. “They’re the next generation. I hope that they realize that in America, this goes beyond voting, but it depends at least on voting. Either you’re in a country where you're going to help rule or you’re gonna be ruled. You're either going to help govern or be governed. I want these young people to realize that they’re a part of the process and it’s better to help govern than be governed.” Moving forward Grassley said there’s several pieces of legislation on which he’s been focused. “So we have the defense authorization build. Now it’s passed the senate and house; it’s in conference; got that done. Get the federal aviation administration reauthorization bill done, get flood insurance done, the farm bill. “ Grassley said however most importantly it's appropriations bills that are of most priority. “The most important thing between now and the end of the year, and the end of the year is technically September 30th but it’s not going to be done by September 30th, we’ve got to pass 12 separate appropriation bills.” This is the first time in quite some time Grassley looks forward to voting on 12 separate bills as opposed to 12 issues all in one single bill.
