City of Dunlap Awarded a $75,000 REAP Parks and Open Space Grant
The City of Dunlap was awarded a $75,000 REAP Parks and Open Space Granton on October 12th. Meredith Anderson VanHouten, Margo Hansen, Jeni Martens, Jill Schaben (DCDC) and Kim McAllister with the Dunlap Grants Committee applied for this grant in an effort to improve upon Dunlap’s Pleasant View Park. Jill Schaben said she’s very proud of the formation of the committee. “I’m really proud because the City of Dunlap, the D.C.D.C., and the Dunlap Betterment Group has joined forces to create what we’re calling the Dunlap Grants Committee.” Schaben said she looks forward to all the future work on the park that can now take place. “We’re so excited because it's an excellent park; there's two shelter houses and a restroom up there but they’re under utilized because there’s no power to them and it’s very costly to try to run electricity to them. So we decided this was a great way to dip our toe in the water on solar energy and see how that plays out. We’re also going to replace the pedestrian bridge that’s on the beautiful paved walking trail on the pond up there. It’s just showing some ware through the ages and we’re going to also try and add some shade trees for the playground”. Schaben thanked Donna Brasel, Melissa Phelps-Groves, and Benjamin Schauer for contributing letters of recommendation as well as Dunlap Mayor Jason Knickman and the Dunlap City Council for supporting the project.
