Former Adair Police Chief sentenced to 5-years in prison
(Des Moines, Iowa) – The former Police Chief in Adair was sentenced today in U-S District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, to spend 5-years (60 months) in prison, following his conviction on making false statements to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Carroll Broadcasting reports former Chief Brad Wendt must also pay a $50,000 criminal penalty and is prohibited from owning firearms.
Wendt was remanded into the custody of the U.S Marshals Service to begin serving his sentence immediately. Following the completion of his term, Wendt will be required to complete three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
In February, a Federal grand jury convicted Wendt of conspiracy to make false statements to the ATF, on eight counts of making a false statement to the ATF, and illegal possession of a machine gun. A sentencing report noted that Wendt exploited his position to buy and sell machine guns for himself and his friends, all for their personal use. Wendt was found guilty of 11 of 13 of felony charges for abusing his position in law enforcement to obtain machine guns for himself and his gun stores in Denison and Anita. Included among those machine guns, was a M134 mini gun allegedly to be used for “crime suppression.”
