Lake View Council Tables Dump Camera Quote, Eyes Expanded Security Across Town
The Lake View City Council has tabled a proposal to install three new security cameras at the city’s dump, opting instead to seek more information before making a final decision. While no immediate action was taken, council members expressed strong support for enhancing surveillance at the dump and other public areas throughout the community.
The proposed quote included three types of cameras: a stationary unit, a high-zoom model with 25x magnification, and a license plate recognition (LPR) camera capable of identifying vehicles entering and exiting the site. Police Chief George Athan noted that a recent trial with similar cameras at the dump led to several arrests and helped resolve a theft case—something not possible with the current outdated system. He also highlighted that the new cameras would streamline operations by unifying all security footage under one software platform.
Chief Athan shared long-term goals to expand surveillance to city parks and public amenities, suggesting the upgrades could be phased in over time. Council Member Jim Jensen voiced support and recommended seeking an additional quote to include the pickleball courts, where Athan reported recent incidents. The council agreed to delay action until more detailed pricing is available, with an updated proposal expected at a future meeting.
