Spill of Porta-Potty Deodorizer Quickly Contained in Denison Intersection

(Denison, Iowa) — Emergency crews quickly responded to an unusual spill Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Avenue C and 7th Street in Denison. Around 2 p.m. on July 8th, Crawford County Emergency Management was alerted by a city employee to an unknown substance on the roadway.
Officials say a bottle containing about one gallon of porta-potty holding tank deodorizer fell from a vehicle owned by Moore’s Portable Toilets. A passing vehicle then struck the bottle, causing it to rupture and spill the contents across the street. A small amount also reached the nearby grass, which was promptly removed and disposed of properly.
Denison Public Works, the Denison Fire Department, and Crawford County Emergency Management responded to the scene. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) was also notified and provided cleanup guidance.
The deodorizer is not classified as hazardous, but it can cause irritation if touched. A temporary containment area was built using sandbags and absorbent material. The spilled liquid was safely vacuumed up by Moore’s crew, and the roadway was reopened shortly afterward.
No injuries were reported, and there was no impact to air or water quality.
Authorities remind residents to report any chemical or unknown spills immediately. Quick action helps ensure public safety and environmental protection.
