Harrison County EMA Urges Residents to Postpone Controlled Burns Amid High Winds and Elevated Fire Risk

(HARRISON COUNTY, Iowa) The Harrison County Emergency Management Agency is asking residents to delay any controlled burns over the next several days due to dangerous weather conditions that could cause fires to spread rapidly.

According to officials, Harrison County is forecasted to experience sustained southerly winds with gusts ranging from 30 to 50 miles per hour, combined with low relative humidity. Those conditions significantly increase the risk of grass and field fires escalating quickly and becoming difficult to control.

Emergency Management officials, along with the Harrison County Fire Association, are urging residents to postpone any planned burns until the area receives measurable moisture. They warn that even small, controlled fires can quickly get out of hand under current conditions.

If residents choose to conduct a controlled burn when conditions improve, officials remind them to call in the burn location ahead of time, never leave the fire unattended, and ensure proper equipment is on hand to maintain control.

Firefighters in Harrison County have already been busy in recent weeks responding to accidents, wildlife-related calls, field fires, and structure fires. Officials say reducing unnecessary fire risks will help protect both emergency responders and the community.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and follow guidance from county officials until conditions improve.
