Denison Police arrest two, respond to three accidents within past week

The Denison Police Department is reporting a pair of recent arrests and a trio of motor vehicle incidents from the several days.

The most recent public release says Brenda Flores of Omaha, Nebraska was arrested at around 1 p.m. Saturday at Walmart. Officers charged the 31-year-old female with 5th degree theft.

Police also arrested Timothy Hoffman of Dow City at just after 4 p.m. this past Tuesday. They took the 37-year-old male into custody on an active arrest warrant for contempt of court.

All charges are allegations and the persons named in a case are to be considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The most recent motor vehicle accident happened on Saturday at just before 3 p.m. near Avenue C and North 7th Street. The report indicates that 43-year-old Jose Mejia in a 2001 Ford F350 and 31-year-old Jessica Schonscheck in a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee, both of Denison, were eastbound on Avenue C at the intersection with North 7th. Schonscheck was stopped at a red light intending to make a right turn. Mejia was following her on the wet road and struck the rear of the Jeep. No injuries were reported. Police cited Mejia for following too close. Damage estimates are listed at $3,000 for the Jeep and $2,000 for the Ford pickup.

A separate Saturday morning accident occurred at just after midnight near U.S. Highway 59. A 2016 Hyundai Sonata driven by 19-year-old Mario Gomez was stopped at the intersection of 59 and Highway 39. Gomez told police that a 2018 Mercedes C300 was approaching the intersection at a high rate of speed. He says one of his passengers told him to stop. The Mercedes allegedly failed to stop for the posted stop sign and side swiped the Hyundai after Gomez stopped midway through the intersection. The Mercedes then reportedly turned off its lights and left the scene. No injuries were reported. The repair cost for the Hyundai is estimated at $2,500.

Another motor vehicle accident occurred just prior to 4 p.m. on Wednesday near U.S. Highway 59 and Arrowhead Drive. Police say 84-year-old Jewel Dierwechter of Storm Lake was northbound on U.S. 59 in a 2017 Ford Escape. A 2006 Kia Spectra driven by 57-year-old Marty Slater was westbound on Arrowhead Drive. The two vehicles reportedly collided in the intersection of 59 and Arrowhead. Slater told police he parked on the shoulder after the impact and watched Dierwechter continue northbound on 59. Slater then caught up to Dierwecther at the intersection of Iowa 141 and U.S. 59. The two vehicles returned to the 59 and Arrowhead intersection awaiting the authorities. Police say it could not be determined which vehicle was at fault. No injuries were reported and no citations were issued. The listed damage estimates totaled $1,000 each for the Escape and the Spectra.
