The IKM-Manning School District has become the latest local district to team up with the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to make permit testing more convenient for students. The Skip the Trip program, launched in 2019, enables middle school students to take the non-commercial driver’s knowledge test for a learner’s permit through designated educational sites. Students can complete the web-based test using a personal laptop at the school, under the guidance of middle school secretary Janell Vollstedt or counselor Rachel Merkel, as long as they are within 30 days of turning 14.
This initiative is designed to make the process more accessible, allowing students to take the test in a familiar setting and minimizing time away from school, while also easing the burden on parents who would otherwise need to take time off work. Once a student passes, a confirmation email is sent to parents, which they can present at any DOT office to obtain the learner’s permit. Parents who have questions or want to schedule a test can reach out to Vollstedt or Merkel using the contact information below.
