DNR Grant Has Wall Lake Looking to Move Forward With Former Elementary Building

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources awarded the City of Wall Lake a grant that will assist with asbestos remediation and partial deconstruction of the former East Sac County Elementary School building. The city council and East Sac Couny School Board have been negotiating to have the city to take possession of the property for nearly a year.

The city is receiving $121,700 which is nearly all of their original request of $132,000 from DNR for this project. The former school building is currently still owned by the board. Officials can now begin the process of selling it to Wall Lake for one dollar. That transaction could be completed by the end of the summer with crews arriving on scene shortly after the 2021-22 school year begins.

Work on the building should be completed by the spring of 2022. City officials had originally hoped to host a community meeting early next month to get the public’s input on how the former school should be used. Scheduling issues delayed that meeting to the end of May or maybe even into June.

The Wall Lake Elementary building closed in June 2020 as part of the district’s effort to reduce cost and consolidate resources into two attendance centers.
